Ever seen a detailed photo of the inside of your own eye? Fundus photography makes that possible — and gives your doctor a powerful tool for tracking your eye health over time.

What Is the Fundus?

The fundus is the interior surface of the eye, including the retina, optic nerve, macula, and blood vessels — essentially everything visible at the back of your eye. It's a part of your body most people never see, but one that reveals a remarkable amount about your health.

What Fundus Photography Captures

Using a specialized camera, fundus photography takes a detailed, high-resolution image of the back of your eye in a single capture. Unlike a live exam view, this creates a permanent, shareable record that can be reviewed, compared over time, or shared with other specialists.

Why It Matters

A single fundus photo can help detect or monitor:

  • Diabetic retinopathy — damage to the retina's blood vessels from diabetes
  • Macular degeneration — changes to the central retina
  • Glaucoma — optic nerve changes suggestive of damage
  • Retinal detachments or tears
  • Hypertensive retinopathy — blood vessel changes related to high blood pressure

Because the image is captured and stored, your doctor can directly compare this year's photo to last year's, spotting subtle changes that might be hard to notice during a single visit alone.

What the Experience Is Like

Fundus photography is quick, painless, and non-invasive. Depending on the type of camera used, some fundus photos can even be taken without dilating your pupils, though a dilated exam still provides the most complete view for many patients.

Beyond Diagnosis

Fundus photos are also valuable for patient education — being able to actually see an image of a cataract, diabetic changes, or a healthy retina can make it much easier to understand what's happening in your own eyes.

The Bottom Line

Fundus photography turns the inside of your eye into something you and your doctor can actually see, track, and compare over time — an important tool for catching changes early.
