UV Protection and Sunglasses: Why It’s Not Just About Style

Sunglasses are one of the easiest ways to protect your long-term eye health — but a lot of people are still choosing them based on looks alone. Here's what actually matters.

Why UV Protection Matters

Just like your skin, your eyes can be damaged by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Over time, cumulative UV exposure is linked to:

  • Cataracts — clouding of the eye's lens
  • Macular degeneration — damage to the part of the retina responsible for central vision
  • Pterygium and pinguecula — growths on the eye's surface caused by sun exposure
  • Photokeratitis — essentially a sunburn on your cornea, which can happen after intense, short-term exposure (like a day on the water or snow)

What to Look for in Sunglasses

Darker lenses aren't automatically better — in fact, dark lenses with no UV protection can be worse than no sunglasses at all, since your pupils dilate behind dark lenses, letting in more unfiltered UV light. Instead, look for:

  • 100% UVA/UVB protection (sometimes labeled UV400)
  • Polarized lenses, which reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water, snow, and pavement — great for driving and outdoor activities, though polarization itself doesn't equal UV protection
  • Wraparound or larger frames, which block more peripheral light from sneaking in around the edges

Don't Forget Kids

Children's eyes are especially vulnerable to UV damage since their natural lenses transmit more UV light than adult eyes. Sunglasses for kids matter just as much — maybe more — than they do for adults.

Prescription Sunglasses

If you wear glasses, prescription sunglasses (or clip-ons/photochromic lenses) mean you don't have to choose between seeing clearly and protecting your eyes.

The Bottom Line

A good pair of sunglasses is genuine eye protection, not just an accessory. Look past the style for a moment and check the label — your eyes will thank you decades from now.
