Some of the most serious eye conditions — glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy — can quietly damage your vision long before you'd ever notice a symptom. OCT imaging is one of the key tools that lets us catch that damage early.
What Is OCT?
OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. It's a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to capture cross-sectional images of your retina — essentially a detailed, layer-by-layer map of tissue that's normally invisible during a standard exam.
What It Shows
Unlike a photo of the surface of your eye, OCT reveals the microscopic structure beneath it, including:
- Retinal thickness and layering
- Fluid buildup, swelling, or thinning
- The health of the optic nerve fiber layer (critical for detecting glaucoma)
- Early changes from macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy
Why It Matters
Many serious eye conditions cause damage that's irreversible once vision is affected — but that damage often starts well before a patient notices anything wrong. OCT can detect subtle structural changes at a stage when treatment is most effective, sometimes years before symptoms would otherwise prompt a visit.
What the Test Is Like
OCT is quick, painless, and doesn't require dilation in most cases (though your doctor may still recommend dilation as part of a broader exam). You simply rest your chin on a support and look at a target light while the machine captures images — the whole scan typically takes just a few minutes.
Who Benefits Most
While OCT can be valuable for any patient, it's especially useful for:
- Patients with glaucoma or glaucoma risk factors
- Patients with diabetes
- Patients with a family history of macular degeneration
- Anyone experiencing unexplained vision changes
The Bottom Line
OCT imaging lets us see problems developing beneath the surface, often before they'd show up any other way. It's one of the reasons routine comprehensive eye exams matter, even when your vision feels perfectly fine.
