One of the most common points of confusion we see at the front desk is insurance — specifically, why a visit might be billed to a vision plan, a medical plan, or both. Here's how it actually works.
Vision Insurance
Vision insurance (plans like VSP or EyeMed) is generally designed to cover routine eye care: a baseline annual eye exam to check your prescription, and often an allowance toward glasses or contact lenses. Think of it as a wellness benefit, similar to how dental insurance covers routine cleanings.
Medical Insurance
Medical insurance comes into play when your visit involves diagnosing or treating an actual eye disease or condition — things like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, dry eye disease, cataracts, or an eye infection. If you have a medical reason for your visit (not just "I think I need new glasses"), it's typically billed to medical insurance instead of, or sometimes alongside, vision insurance.
Why a Visit Might Be Billed to Both
It's common for a single visit to involve both. For example: you come in for a routine exam (vision insurance), but during that exam we discover early signs of diabetic eye disease, which then gets billed to medical insurance for that portion of the care. This isn't billing "extra" — it reflects that two different things happened during your visit.
What This Means for You
- If you're coming in for a routine check with no specific complaints, your vision insurance is likely the primary coverage
- If you have a specific symptom, diagnosis, or chronic condition affecting your eyes, expect medical insurance to be involved
- Bring both cards to every visit if you have them — our billing team will sort out what applies
The Bottom Line
Insurance in eye care isn't one-size-fits-all, and that's by design — vision and medical plans cover different things for a reason. If you're ever unsure what will be billed where, our office is happy to walk through it with you before your appointment.
